How to Measure

How to Take Your Body Measurements

Before using any body measurements chart, you need accurate measurements. Here is how to take the four key measurements correctly.

Bust / Chest

Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest — across the nipple line. For women, measure in a non-padded bra or no bra. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. This is your bust measurement used for dress size, bra size, and body shape.

Waist

Find your natural waist by bending slightly to one side — the crease is your natural waist, usually 1 to 2 inches above your belly button. Wrap the tape around this narrowest point. Breathe out gently and read. Do not suck in your stomach.

Hips

Stand with feet together. Find the widest point of your hips and seat — usually 7 to 9 inches below your natural waist. Wrap the tape level all the way around. Feet together is important — standing with feet apart gives a smaller inaccurate reading.

Height

Stand against a wall without shoes. Place a flat book on top of your head level with the wall. Mark the wall at the bottom of the book. Measure from the floor to the mark. Height is used for dress length, trouser length, and some size chart references.

FAQ

Body Measurements Chart — FAQs

What are standard body measurements?

Standard body measurements for clothing are bust, waist, and hips — taken with a soft tape measure at specific points. Bust is measured at the fullest chest point. Waist at the narrowest torso point. Hips at the widest point. These three measurements are used for all clothing size charts, body shape calculators, and dress size guides.

How do I read a body measurements chart?

Find the row that matches your bust measurement. Check that your waist and hip measurements also fall within that row's range. If your measurements fall in different rows for bust, waist, and hips, size for the largest measurement and choose flexible styles or alter for the others. Always compare with the specific brand's chart as sizes vary.

What is the average body measurement for a woman?

In the US, average female measurements are approximately bust 38–40 inches, waist 34–36 inches, hips 41–43 inches. In the UK, averages are similar at bust 38 inches, waist 34 inches, hips 40 inches. These averages correspond to approximately US size 16–18 or UK size 16.

How do body measurements relate to body shape?

Body shape is determined by the proportional relationship between your bust, waist, and hip measurements. If hips and bust are balanced with a clearly smaller waist — hourglass. If hips are wider than bust — pear or triangle. If waist is fuller — apple. If all measurements are similar — rectangle. Use the free body shape calculator to find your shape from measurements.

What is the difference between body measurements and dress size?

Body measurements are the actual circumference of your body in inches or centimeters. Dress size is a standardized number assigned by clothing brands that roughly corresponds to body measurement ranges. The same body measurements can be a different dress size at different brands because sizing is not standardized. Always use body measurements rather than size labels when shopping online.
